UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principals MessageIt has been so great to see our children wearing full school uniform each day including the correct school hat. We are heading into summer and the sun will become more intense so wearing the correct hat and applying sun cream is imperative. Drink bottles are essential and can be filled throughout the day in classrooms. Mrs Rajendra will be taking some personal leave for the next two weeks and I will be relieving as principal during this time. The assistant principals Mrs White, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Breasley will continue as usual in their current roles. As we draw closer to the end of the year there are many events and activities booked in with COVID restrictions being adhered to. Please keep check with the school calendar and your child's class teacher if you need to confirm a date etc. We are certainly looking at planning for 2021 and have been asking parents/carers for their feedback through the Tell Them From Me surveys. We are refining our strategic directions and finalising our school situational analysis. It looks like our three strategic directions will focus more so on well being, student attainment in Literacy and Numeracy, critical thinking and reflecting that promotes engaging and inquiry focused learning and community connections. Please feel welcome to share your thoughts and ideas to about our school and areas of focus that could be considered. As you may be aware the staff have attended one twilight staff development session to make up for the last day of school for the teachers. We will be holding our final twilight session for the teachers in week seven of this term that will conclude at 6.15pm. Teachers have begun preparing for end of year student reports. The reports will look similar to end of year reports 2019. UPS staff will be reviewing our school report format during term one of 2021. School attendance Students should be at school unless:
NSW Health has requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinicsExternal link. Students and staff with flu-like symptoms will need to be tested and provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test result will not be permitted to return to school for a 10 day period. Additionally, they must be symptom-free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school. NAIDOC Week Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country Next week we will be celebrating NAIDOC week commencing with the opening of our UPS Yarning Circle. Throughout the week a variety of experiences have been organised where students will be immersed in hands on cultural activities. Kindergarten Orientation We welcomed our first group of 2021 Kindergarten students this week for orientation. It was lovely to see their smiling faces as they spent time in the classrooms. Mrs Edwards and her team have worked hard to plan and prepare for these sessions and we welcome our new families to UPS. If you know of any local families who have a child starting Kindergarten in 2021, please encourage them to contact our wonderful School Office staff for further details. Playground Upgrade Our amazing Yarning Circle is now complete and will be open to all classes after the official opening next week. In addition, the SRC are busily working on the final plans for the new sandpit which we are hoping to have in use as soon as possible. Students in 1B got to show off their sentence of the week assessment to Mrs Rajendra. There has also been multiple lunch clubs running daily for students to participate in, such as gardening, just dance, mine craft education and bucket drumming. Students also got to use their PBL reward, where they got to enjoy tea and tim tams with Mrs McCabe. The playground construction of the Yarning Circle and sandpit has been completed and will be revealed soon, so stay tuned! As part of the Stage 1 unit about communication, ‘Cracking the Code’, we have been learning about sound. The students in 2B have participated in a number of interesting science activities and experiments that demonstrate how sounds are produced, and how they travel from a sound source to your ears. 1B have been excited to explore the range of communication and sound tools used on country. Mrs Talbott brought in may different tools used for communication purposes for 1B to explore such as a bullroarer and clap sticks. We have discussed with Mrs Talbott where dot painting originated and learnt from an interview with Mrs Talbott that painting is how she communicates her culture. 1B have enjoyed making special artworks with Mrs Talbott this year, especially our class turtle that features all of 1B’s hand prints. In the morning, students walked down to Sheargold Park to compete in running races against other students in their year group. K-2 students ran a 100m race, and students from 3-6 ran 100m and a relay race. There were a lot of students cheering for their friends and for their house colours. It was a great atmosphere! And have some fun. Unanderra Swim SchemeUnfortunately due to COVID restrictions around the use of public pools and their change rooms our School Swim Scheme will not be running for 2020. We encourage all families to teach their children about water safety and enroll them in swimming lessons to help keep them safe at the pool and beach this Summer.
