UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principals MessageDear Parents/Carers, It was really lovely to return to Unanderra P.S this week after some time away. My sincere thanks to Mrs Brennan and all of our incredible staff who ensured that the weeks flowed by seamlessly. As usual term four continues to remain busy with nearly each day having an activity. We have certainly tried to cram a lot in so that our children can enjoy in some part what they may have missed out on throughout the months of lockdown. The teachers in stage three having been really working hard to provide as many exciting and memorable experiences as possible to end the year. Between writing reports, planning the year 6 graduation and arranging the celebration dinner and dancing it is fair to say that our stage 3 teachers hope that our fabulous year 6 students take away positive memories of 2020 being their final year of primary school. During my absence our school officially opened the Yarning Circle and shared in what I understand to be quite a moving and special assembly. Congratulations to all involved in the planning and presentation of this really important event. We are celebrating Book Week this week and I thank Miss Prior and the staff for all of the planning and preparation they have done to make it memorable. Our book parade on Friday will adhere to COVID safety guidelines and we look forward to sharing footage with you very soon after. The long awaited Colour Explosion will be held next week so parents and carers are reminded to encourage their children to wear a white t-shirt to better enjoy the colourful experience. Teachers are currently writing reports and preparing to finalise these for the end of the year. These reports will be presented similarly to the semester 2, 2019 reports. We are currently looking at our enrolments for 2021 and ask that any families who are planning to enrol their child/ren at Unanderra Public School please contact our school office as soon as possible. It has been so fabulous to meet our newest kindergarten children for 2021 and we are excited to welcome them into Unanderra Public School. If you know of any family in local area who are planning to attend our school please ask them to contact the school office for information. Please continue to check the school calendar as there are so many exciting activities happening to end the term. If you require any further details or information please do not hesitate to contact the school office or to speak with your child’s class teacher. One again thank you all so much for all of your support and understanding. Have a fabulous fortnight ahead. Kind Regards, Anissa Rajendra Throughout term 4, 5/6M have been studying Myths Legends and Fairy tales. Our unit of work has been heavily focused on Greek Mythology. We have been learning and the Gods and Goddesses of Mount Olympus, studying Greek mythological creatures and we have been reading “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan. Our writing task this term has been to compose a rich and evocative character description of a mythological creature; created by the children. The children have used vivid and precise vocabulary along literary devices such as similes, metaphors and personification to describe their mythical beast. The children thoroughly enjoyed the task. Here are a few excerpts for you to read… Unanderra Public School recently celebrated NAIDOC Week. This week was full of Aboriginal focused activities and lessons which allowed all students to come together to celebrate Indigenous, history, achievement and culture. In KS, we began our week with an opening ceremony of the newly constructed Yarning Circle - a place of meeting and ceremony. This whole school event allowed students to be introduced to Indigenous ceremony and dance as well have students recognised for their achievement through the year. On Tuesday, KS was out learning about Indigenous games and culture. Gumaraa, a local Aboriginal education company, taught the students about the importance of the land and how they lived off it through hunting and also preserved it through migration and back burning. They learnt about the importance of dance in both communication and ceremony and the power of storytelling in the passing on of life lessons and important information. On Wednesday and Thursday the students in KS learnt about Aboriginal painting techniques by creating their own artworks of the wugan - crow. The students trialed different tools and techniques and persevered to create their artworks. On Friday the students finished off the week by playing some Indigenous games. The students rotated through a range of games such as ‘barambah gimbe’ which had the students practicing their throwing and catching skills. All of the games had the students practicing skills and having fun while doing it. The week was a fantastic immersion into aspects of Indigenous culture that brought all students together talking and sharing. KS had a great time and continue to talk about the learning and fun had during the week. WEEK 6 ASSEMBLY AWARDS |
