UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principal's Message Dance Festival After many weeks of rehearsals the UPS dance troupe led by Mrs Layton and Miss Bell performed a number of times at the IPAC in Wollongong last week. There were a number of late nights and early mornings including a full Saturday of shows. The students performed incredibly and they represented UPS proudly. Thank you so much to the students and their families for all of their support. A huge thank you to Mrs Layton and Miss Bell for the many, many hours they devoted to making sure that this was a successful experience for everyone involve. Congratulations and thank you! Reconciliation Week 2021 Last Friday the students, teachers and school community participated in a very important assembly to acknowledge the significance of Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. Reconciliation involves building positive, respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians enabling every one of us to work together to close the gaps and to achieve a shared sense of fairness and justice. The theme for 2021 is, Grounded in Truth: More than a word. Reconciliation takes Action. This theme urges all of us, as part of the reconciliation movement, towards braver and more impactful action. This public school community is on that journey. When we look around our school we take great pride in The Yarning Circle, Koori Club, PLP BBQ’s just to name a few and through our collective commitment we will continue to embed understanding and story telling in our day to day teaching and discussions. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. (NSW DoE 2021) Mrs Brennan will be escorting a group of Aboriginal children and their friends for a Reconciliation morning tea at Figtree High School this Wednesday. We are very proud of this group of children attending. Multicultural Public Speaking Congratulations to the children who have been selected as finalists in the Multicultural Public Speaking competition. They will present their speech in front of all Stage 2 and Stage 3 students in our school hall on Wednesday 2nd June 2021. Thank you to Mrs Jackson for coordinating this valuable learning experience. Best wishes to our competing students. Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend Just a friendly reminder that Monday 14 June (Monday, week 9) is the Queens birthday long weekend. There will be no school on that Monday. Enjoy the long weekend with family and friends. Kindergarten 2022 The Department of Education has released a new enrolment procedure, meaning that families can now enrol their child at any time. Once enrolled, it is my understanding that your child will then qualify for Active Kids and Creative Kids vouchers. Please note that when you complete the online enrolment application, you will receive an email stating that the school will call you to book an appointment for you to come in with your required paperwork. Please ignore this email, it is automatically generated by the system. Once you have all of your documentation, simply drop in and we will complete the process with you. Enrolment link: https://enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/#/?schoolCode=3308 Active Kids Voucher: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-active-kids-voucher Creative Kids Voucher: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-creative-kids-voucher Canteen Our thanks to the wonderful canteen workers who work hard to provide quality food and service to our school community. Please remember to check the amounts of money your child/children are bringing to school to spend. For the younger children it is suggested that parents/carers clearly label how the money is to be spent particularly if it is a larger amount that may need to either feed siblings or purchase more than one meal in the day. Thank you to the parents/carers supporting the canteen. Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Pick-ups Our great school proudly celebrates diversity acceptance and respectful communication at all times between teachers, parents, visitors, students and the wider community. Respectful conversations and respectful behaviours are expected by all staff, parents/carers and visiting community members at all times. Please be mindful that at times the afternoon pick up at the front entrance can become a little congested with people and cars, for a short period of time and so patience is essential. We understand that this can sometimes feel frustrating, however the teachers do their best to escort children out of the school grounds as safely and as orderly as possible. Children will be able to enter the car when it is safe to do so. It is important that once parents/carers have collected their child/ren that they move off in a timely manner so as not to mingle. We continue to follow COVID-19 guidelines and also aim to ensure a safe departure for all children and adults at all times. It is important to remember that the drop zone is a NO PARKING zone. If your child is not ready for pick up when you arrive it is necessary for you to drive on and turn around where it is safe and legal to do so. Please be reassured that there is always a teacher waiting with your child. UPS staff thank our parents/carers and whole school community for their patience and understanding. P & C Pie Drive Last Friday a number of parents from the P & C committee gave their time to organise many hundreds of pies and bakery treats for families to take home that day. It was an enormous task and we are so very grateful for the hard work and organisation that went into making this a great success. I have certainly enjoyed the pies as I am sure many families did over the weekend. Our thanks is extended to all the parents/carers who purchased items from this bakery to support this huge fundraiser for our school. Thank you to everyone involved. Recess and Lunch Clubs. UPS host many different activities during each play time. Hula hooping, dancing and building with blocks have been some of the highlights recently with our younger students. The older students have been busy practising their basketball skills and soccer skills on the grassed area. The library and quiet room offer a calmer space for the children who are interested and of course lego and cooking in Koori Club remains a popular attraction. Natural habitats Playground Works You will have noticed fencing around the lower part of the grassed area beside the basketball court recently. Work has begun on a natural playground area complete with a dry creek bed and short walking paths. This project has been planned for some time now which will be a very welcome additional play area for the children to explore and enjoy for years to come. Thank you for your continued support. Have a great fortnight ahead. Sandra Silberzweig is an abstract artist who uses a variety of different lines and colours to create portraits. 3W have had a go at making some of our own! We think they look fantastic and we hope you enjoy them! This term, 4S has undertaken the history unit ‘Country and Place,’ which revolves around the local Indigenous area and the connection that the First Nations people have to Country. This particular lesson focused on ‘Country as Teacher.’ We all went to the school’s yarning circle with our writing materials and wrote down what Country was teaching us while we were sitting down and observing our natural surroundings . Some great responses were given and the students gained a deeper understanding on the importance and significance of the land that we stand on. We had a very successful Scholastic Book Fair in Week 4 and it was lovely to see so many families in the iLibrary again after such a long break. Thank you to everyone who purchased something at the Fair. Based on a 30% take of the money spent at the fair, the iLibrary raised $1,600 to be spent on books to refresh our collection. In addition, last week, the iLibrary hosted National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) with students welcomed to the iLibrary to listen to the astronaut, Shannon Walker, read Australian author Philip Bunting's book 'Give Me Some Space' from the International Space Station. We had so much fun joining millions of children around Australia listening to the same story at the same time and getting into the spirit of the Space theme. Carrying on the fun, at lunchtime, students came to the library to participate in more NSS activities. In tune with the space theme and Star Wars Day being May the 4th, we currently have a fabulous Space/Star Wars book display in the library encouraging students to explore all things astronomical! Remember 'Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.' - Emilie Buchwald, so take some time to read with your kids and enjoy that precious time with them. Rachel Prior Teacher Librarian PSSA SportThis term UPS has had several Stage 3 students qualify to trial at PSSA South Coast level for a wide range of representative sports, including: touch football, cricket and rugby league. This is a huge achievement as it means they demonstrated exceptional skills and sportsmanship to outperform students from 13 other schools to represent at this level. We are extremely proud of those students and commend them on their efforts for making it that far. A big thank you to the class teachers and office staff for supporting the students to have these opportunities in particular. Miss Denham and Mrs Alewood. Athletics CarnivalThe K-6 Athletics Carnival is coming up in week 9 on the 9th of June. The following program is for the field and track events for students turning 8 years and above. Spelling BeeThe Fathering Projecthttps://youtu.be/tF3ZvIAK3DM Raising Girls (Part 3)In our third week of our Raising Girls series, Dr Bruce Robinson explains a father’s role in raising a confident daughter. The words you use and how you treat her has a profound impact on whether she’ll grow into a confident woman. It’s suggested that the confidence a woman has as an adult is most influenced by the relationship she had with her dad. We can build or break confidence in our daughters. Sometimes, without noticing and with the best intentions, we can slowly start to wear away at her confidence if we aren’t careful. We need to ensure we remain self-aware through words and actions so we help to raise confident girls. Tips to build your daughter’s confidence
Dear Supporter, REQUEST FOR SPONSORSHIP This year NAIDOC Week “Heal Country” 2021 will be a time to once again celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made – and continue to make – to our land, our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. The Green Street NAIDOC Family Fun Day event will be held on Tuesday 6th July 2021 in the vacant lot in Green Street, Warrawong (opposite Warrawong Community Centre). This is a prominent cultural event for the Illawarra Aboriginal Community. The event itself requires considerable coordination to ensure the hundreds of Illawarra Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents who attend enjoy the celebration of Aboriginal culture and society. Along with cultural celebrations, there are also important social, health, well-being and economic benefits that this event provides. The multitude of stalls cover a range of community and health services all of which have staff providing expert advice on many services essential to the health and wellbeing of the community. This opportunistic engagement in a safe and friendly setting can make the difference to the lives of many individuals and families attending the event. Local artists and acts will be invited to entertain on the day that promotes local talent and gives opportunities for local artists to gain experience and to build on their profile. Unfortunately, as you would be aware, the event is run on a tight budget and therefore requires the support of local businesses and organisations to award prizes, activities and the running of the day overall. The Green Street NAIDOC Family Fun Day organising committee would be very grateful for any form of contribution from Warrawong Plaza in supporting our local Aboriginal community and its artists. Contributions can be, by either money (up to $1500.00), goods or services. In reciprocation, your organisation will receive mention in our promotional material at the event and through promotion on the day. If you require any further information, please feel free to contact me on 42277158 or via email [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you and collaborating with you. Warm Regards, 2021 Green Street NAIDOC Family Fun Day Committee
