UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principals MessageWelcome to week five of term two. A big thank you and my deep appreciation is extended to the wonderful staff, parents and students of UPS who have been an incredible support and strength to me while I needed to take an extended period of personal leave. It has been fabulous to return to a playground full of smiles, a school filled with positive chatter and lots of active learning happening in each classroom. KINDERGARTEN 2022 ENROLMENT The Department of Education has released a new enrolment procedure, meaning that families can now enrol their child at any time. Once enrolled, it is my understanding that your child will then qualify for Active Kids and Creative Kids vouchers. Please note that when you complete the online enrolment application, you will receive an email stating that the school will call you to book an appointment for you to come in with your required paperwork. Please ignore this email, it is automatically generated by the system. Once you have all of your documentation, simply drop in and we will complete the process with you. Enrolment link: https://enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/#/?schoolCode=3308 Active Kids Voucher: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-active-kids-voucher Creative Kids Voucher: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-creative-kids-voucher MOTHER’S DAY. I hope everybody had a fabulous weekend sharing time with family and friends. The children were extremely excited to create cards in their classes and purchase gifts from our fabulous P&C Mother’s Day stall. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who contribute so much of their own time to support our school. NAPLAN NAPLAN began last week at all schools for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, from Tuesday until Friday. Our students were supported through the process with our focus being to encourage each of them positively. We remind ourselves that NAPLAN is, after all, just one assessment. Whilst it provides valuable information on an individual and whole school basis, it’s important to remember that the assessments done in class, on a regular basis, are generally more informative and give greater detail than one-off tests such as this one. CASUAL TEACHERS AT UPS When a teacher is sick or their child is sick we employ a casual teacher where possible to take the class. If the class normally has library or another teacher for the RFF program on that day we intend for this to go ahead unless there are unforeseen circumstances that prevent us from doing so. Currently it has been very difficult to consistently book a casual teacher and at times we need to split the class for the day. Stage appropriate workbooks have been created and the students are allocated set time frames to complete these set tasks during the day with classroom teacher guidance. COVID requirements are still in place for schools and staff are required to follow the advice below:
Casual teachers are utilised for classroom teachers to complete school business. This year we have had our Strategic Improvement Plan to complete, for the next four years, and all staff were required to have input into the creation of this document. At times the teachers participate in professional learning and have days where teachers are off together in their stages to collaborate and plan together for the next learning cycle to ensure there is consistency with assessment and programs. Whole school events such as the athletics carnivals and special initiatives days, require significant organisation including risk assessments and safety plans. Teachers, at times, will be allocated time off class to prepare for these efficiently. When the classroom teacher is off class due to school business they will leave the work for the casual teacher and provide the communication of all essential information relating to their students. Class specific casual folders are provided to all casuals on arrival with timetables, class lists and information needed about students for the casual on that day. This allows the casual teacher to try and follow class timetables if the work has not been left due to sickness. Additionally, the assistant principals of each stage and teachers in classrooms near the casual teacher, check in throughout the day to ensure the casual teacher and students are well-supported to have a successful day. The parents/carers of UPS have and continue to provide our teachers and staff with great support and understanding and we are always so appreciative of this. FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM We are all proud to be a part of the Unanderra Public School community and as such expect that each of our students to wear their uniform with great pride. As the weather becomes cooler I understand that additional clothing may need to be worn. Parents/carers are reminded that only school jumpers are to be worn to school and long colourful socks or colourful jumpers are not permitted. UPS are always willing to discreetly support families with school uniforms etc where necessary. Families requiring support are encouraged to contact the school for further information. Please also note that all children who are representing UPS such as attending high school master classes etc are expected to wear their full school uniform. Once again, thank you for your continued support. Have a great fortnight ahead. On Wednesday we participated in a camping at school incursion where we experienced a variety of camp activities including; building sandcastles, a hike, tent building and camp songs. We will now use this shared experience to further develop our ability to write a personal recount of events and activities by elaborating on details and using specific vocabulary to relive the experiences. This Term 3A has been learning about the Dharawal seasons as part of our history unit on ‘Country and Place’ which focuses on community and remembrance. We have loved learning about the signs animals and plants gave the Dharawal people that seasons were changing. We have been discussing a variety of Dreaming stories, the importance of Country and how we can learn about our area from the local people. Did you know we are currently in the time of Marrai’gang? This season runs from April to June and the weather becomes cooler and wetter. Have you noticed these changes in our weather? Children aged 5-12 from all Australian states and territories are invited to unleash their creativity through art while learning about our incredible plants and animals, and the threats facing them. Each child can choose one of Australia’s many threatened animals or plants to research, create, and write a short explanation of their work. Copies of artworks and written explanations can be submitted by teachers, program managers and parents via ACF’s website from 5 June. An exhibition of artworks by finalists will be held in Sydney in September, with winners announced on Tuesday 7 September, Threatened Species Day. When we talk about beauty, we’re referring to much more than the exterior appearance. From a young age, it’s important you make this evident with your daughter so she grows up to know it’s not just about her exterior that makes her a beautiful person. In a society where girls are constantly fed photoshopped images, the use of social media, and the depiction of a ‘perfect’ woman, confidence doesn’t come easy. As her father, by affirming many other traits that make her beautiful, you help her to recognise her self-worth and confidence. In doing so, she’ll be more likely to grow into a woman who’s secure within her own body and realises beauty comes from within. Tips to affirm your daughter’s beauty
