UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principals MessageDear Parents and Carers, Welcome once again to all of our students and families to 2021. It has been really great to see all of our students enthusiastically returning to school this year. Congratulations and welcome to our new kindergarten families and all of our new families who have joined the Unanderra Public School community. The staff have been preparing for the year ahead and have been busy preparing lessons and exciting learning experiences for the children. School Numbers As you know we have formed our 2021 classes. To reduce class sizes, we have created two additional classes which means that we now have 17 classes K-6. Student numbers have remained steady which is a positive start and allows our school to maintain continuity around school funding and resourcing. No Hat Play in the Shade Students are to wear school hats. Students who do not have their school hat will be told to play in a designated shaded area. School hats may be purchased from the administration office for $11 cash as the P &C source and coordinate this. School Uniform We all take great pride in belonging to the Unanderra Public School community. With this in mind, it is expected that all students wear full school uniform each school day. Representative jumpers are only allowed be worn on Fridays. Coloured jumpers, socks and accessories are to be worn on weekends. The ups school uniform can be purchased in Lowes in Figtree. Lost property, including school jumpers and hats are kept near the library. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. Breakfast Club The breakfast club, which is located near the canteen under the cola is open each Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:15am. P&C This year we will continue with our P&C Meeting time at 7pm on the first Monday of the month. The first meeting will be Monday 8 February. The meeting will take place at school. As our onsite attendance numbers are restricted due to COVID-19, parents and carers are asked to email Jodien, [email protected] to confirm their anticipated attendance. We hope to see you there! School Playground Students will have noticed that there are additional yellow lines throughout the playground, walkways and near classrooms. These yellow markers have been painted to assist our students and visitors with a vision impairment. Thank you to the NSW DoE employees, administration staff and Mr Thomas for ensuring that this work is completed in such a timely manner. Departure times The afternoon departure procedures have become smoother as the week as progressed and I thank everyone for their patience and understanding. To begin the 2021 school year, we have continued to implement ongoing staggered departure. The current plan will stay in place until further notice. If for some reason you are running late, please contact the school office and we can make appropriate arrangements for your child until you arrive. As with many schools, parking around our school, especially at pick up time, is difficult. Where possible, we encourage families to walk. If this is not a possibility, we ask that parents display patience, understanding and care. It is important to remember that the school drop zone does not allow parking. The drop zone is for two minutes and the safe flow of traffic during afternoon pick up is critical. Students will not be allowed to enter cars unless it is safe to do so. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our students and their families as they depart and your cooperation in this matter is appreciated. Morning Supervision It has been great to see nearly all of our students arriving to school on time and ready to start the school day. Please remember that school supervision begins at 8:30am (expect for Mondays and Thursdays for breakfast club). To ensure safety and supervision, children should not be at school before 8.30am. Upon arrival at school all students are expected to sit quietly in the cola area until otherwise directed by a teacher. Please ensure that your child is at school no later than 8.55am as rolls will be marked on entering the classroom. Notes Home Over the next few weeks parents and carers will be receiving numerous notes filled with information and requests for signed permission notes to be returned. Please check your child’s bag and contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for your prompt return of these notes in the coming weeks. Communication As you would be aware the NSW Department of Education and NSW Health continue to provide frequent updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. At times the information shared can be quite specific and at other times less so. At all times the health safety and wellbeing of student, staff and the school community is paramount. It always my intention to maintain a constant flow of information to parents and carers and I am always reassured by the commitment and hard work of our teachers and school staff. I also appreciate the ongoing support of our parents and carers and understand that at times decisions made can cause disappointment. Positive and respectful feedback is always appreciated and any unintended oversights will always be noted for future reference. Parent Information Sessions Parent information sessions in Week 3 and 4 have been arranged. This is an opportunity for you to hear from your child’s class teacher about expectations, homework, excursions, units of work and other activities being offered this year. This year, parent information sessions for Years 1-6 will be hosted by individual class teachers in their respective classrooms at 8.25am before school. Students are expected to wait under the cola for regular before school play. Parents/carers are asked to go directly to classrooms to reduce mingling and ensure social distancing protocols are adhered to. A QR code and hand sanitiser will be accessible at the entry point of each classroom. Kindergarten parents will be hosted in the hall on Friday 12 February 2021 at 2pm. Further details will be sent home today. As we begin a new school plan with lots of ambitious targets to work towards for our students, staff and whole school community. We all have lots of exciting opportunities ahead for our school and I look forward to working with you all throughout this year ahead. Kind Regards, Anissa Rajendra Starting with a Splash!UPS staff and students have dived straight into Term 1 with the School Swimming Carnival. The day was a huge success with student aged 8 and over competing with pride for their houses in a range of events. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day and everyone displayed great sportsmanship to encourage and cheer on their peers. I would like to say a huge thank you for those parents who helped in the roles of time-keeping and marshaling on the day. We could not have run such a wonderful and efficient carnival without you and greatly appreciate your support. The South Wollongong District PSSA swimming carnival will be held on 25th February in week 5. Students who made the qualifying times for their events will be receiving a permission note in the coming weeks. Mrs Alewood New Method of CommunicationThis year we will be using two main forms of communication with our school community. We will continue to use Seesaw and information about how to access new classes will be available shortly. Our school has also undertaken a new initiative, the Parent Portal. This will replace Skoolbag as our main method of communication. This portal links to systems already used by teachers at the school. You will be able to submit student absence notifications, as well as access the school calendar and all notes and communication. In time, this portal will also be used to book parent/teacher interviews. You will be receiving a letter in the coming week with all the information you need to connect to this portal. The Parent Portal can be accessed via the Sentral for Parents App. To get started visit: www.sentral.com.au/our-products/parents See the flyer below for more information. Disability HubA new online hub has been created to support families and carers who have children with disability or additional learning and support needs. https://education.nsw.gov.au/parents-and-carers/inclusive-learning-support
