UNANDERRA PUBLIC Principal's MessageWelcome to the final newsletter for 2021. My thanks are extended to everyone for their support, encouragement and patience in what has certainly been a challenging but productive year. This week we farewelled the year 6 students and reminisced on the year that was. Our kindergarten children completed their first year of formal learning in a very different way to most other years and our families managed home learning with resilience and perseverance. The teachers and staff are very appreciative to the families and broader school community of Unanderra Public School and look forward to a less complex year ahead. Today is the final day of school today and all students will return on Tuesday 1 February 2022. As the year draws to an end it is important that we acknowledge and thank all of the staff at Unanderra P.S for their incredible hard work and dedication to public education. There are some staff members who I wish to particularly pay special tribute to in this final newsletter for 2021. Mrs White has been teaching at UPS for thirty-one years and has been instrumental in ensuring that our all of our students begin their formal learning career with a love of learning and an enthusiasm to explore the world around them. Mrs White has created fabulous memories for the children and staff at UPS, more recently with stage 2 students. Her kindness and dedication to the students and broader school community is certainly remarkable and unwavering. Mrs White is highly respected by her students and colleagues and her support for the P&C has been truly appreciated. We will certainly miss Mrs White and will always be very appreciative of the positive impact she has had on the entire Unanderra Public School community. Thank you so much Mrs White and we wish you all the very best in the next part of your exciting life journey. Mr Walsh has been successful in securing a permanent classroom position at Dapto Public School. We value his hard work and having such a calming and proactive approach to teaching and will fondly remember his awesome sense of humour and kindness. His contribution and dedication to the students at UPS is greatly appreciated and we wish him well in his future endeavours. Mrs Layton has created fabulous memories for all of the children K-6 from Illawarra Dance festival through to creating many exciting learning experiences for both prospective kindergarten students and current kindergarten students! We thank her and express our great appreciation to her for the outstanding contribution that she has made to Unanderra Public School. We congratulate her on her new temporary engagement at Bellambi P.S for 2022. Mrs Jewell has been working one day each week in administration office this year and the students and families are very grateful for the work she has done. We thank her for her commitment to Unanderra Public School and wish her all the very best in her future endeavours. Mrs Smith has been working at UPS over the past two years as both a learning and support teacher and a classroom teacher. We are extremely grateful for the hours of work she has committed to the school and truly appreciate her expertise and knowledge that she has shared with us. We wish her well in her future adventures and look forward to hearing of her successes in the years ahead. Farewell Year 6 The students in year 6 are now facing exciting new challenges in 2022 and beyond will most certainly recall many great memories of their time in primary school and hold dear the positive words of encouragement and support provided to them by their classroom teachers along the way. All of the students looked amazing at the farewell on Monday evening and should all feel proud of how well they participated in the evening of celebrations. A huge thank you to the stage 3 teachers for their incredible organization of the memorable events held this week to commemorate this significant milestone. I wish you all the very best in your first year of high school and encourage you to be kind always and work hard to follow your values that contribute to making your own dreams come true. Congratulations. Election BBQ The election weekend provided an opportunity for our dedicated P&C and parent volunteers, to run a BBQ. I would like to thank Jodien our P & C president and all those involved in the preparation, organisation and participation. It was great to be able to once again have the opportunity to fundraise on our beautiful school grounds. Kindergarten Orientation Following many online activity sessions, we were excited to invite our 2022 Kindergarten students onto our school grounds for their face-to-face Kindergarten Orientation. It was wonderful to see lots of smiling faces, ready in anticipation for what is ahead. Teachers encouraged the children to participate in activities and become familiar with the school grounds while getting to know some familiar faces. The teachers cannot wait for the new year to arrive and to start to work with our next generation of Unanderra Public School students. Reports Due to the disruption caused by COVID, adjustments to curriculum have been made throughout Terms 3 and 4. As a result of this extended period of learning from home, student reporting in Semester 2, 2021 will be modified. This is in line with guidelines set by the NSW Department of Education. In Semester 2, 2021 the formal written report for each student will:
Enrolments for 2022 In order to have accurate numbers for next year, it is important to notify the school office if you know your child will not be returning to Unanderra Public School next year (other than Year 6). This information helps us to plan for 2022. Alternatively, if you know of friends or family members who intend to enrol their children in Unanderra Public School in 2022, please ask them to contact the school office to fill in the necessary documentation. End of year thank you! My thanks are extended to the teachers, SLSO’s, office administration staff, general assistant, cleaners and DoE personal who ensure that each day is filled with engaging learning experiences in a safe, clean and harmonious school environment that is well resourced. The learning of our children cannot be fully achieved without the support the UPS community. Each day the parents and friends of this great school community have conversations about what else they can do to make a positive difference. These conversations set the ball rolling into motion with action, such as the P & C contributing to Dance2BFit costume accessories for the entire school, purchasing laptops, fundraising through election BBQs and gingerbread houses just to name a few. Making a difference through such an inclusive model of financial assistance makes our school an incredible place to be for all children and we thank you all so much. A big thanks to the Matar family who have been donating fruit each week from their business Woonona Fruit basket. The students are staff are most appreciative of this ongoing donation. Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and new year and have a fabulous holiday break with family and friends. The UPS staff are looking forward to seeing you all in 2022. Kind Regards, Anissa Rajendra 4W have been learning to write Journey Tales. Here are some excerpts from their stories! As another boiling hot summer day went slowly past, a young boy named Halil was feeling thirsty and extremely hungry. So he thought he’d go to the servo to get some snacks and drinks for himself and his family. By Halil S Riding his bike down the road, Timmy suddenly heard a pop. His bike came to a stop and when Timmy looked at his tyre he saw that it was flat. Luckily, he was near a gas station that let you pump up your tyre for free. So Timmy carried his bike there, fixed his tyre and then continued on his journey. By Mohamed M As the three suns rose over planet e49f3, a sixteen year old teenager called Darren woke from his slumber. Darren was a green alien with fifteen eyes and twelve legs. Today was the day that he would be doing his final driving test. It would take place between his planet and his grandalien’s planet. By Oscar RV Swimming gracefully through the Northern Kelp Forest, Sunset felt as happy as a clam. Whoosh! A current swept Sunset into a humungous tangle of kelp! She twisted and turned but she was truly stuck. “Oh no!” Sunset thought in doubt. She was really hungry. “What about I try chewing through the kelp!” she exclaimed. So she chewed and chewed and chewed some more until she was free. With that she set off on her journey once again, Sophie G As the sun glistened on top of the water, Tsunami, a water phoenix, was woken by the crashing waves. Tsunami was caring and kind. She had a sharp beak and long black and blue tail feathers. This morning she was going to see Queen Coral, who lived at Sparkle Palace, the underwater castle. By Zahlia L 4W have also been busy with lots of other classroom activities, including maths, interviews, and technology. The students in 2B have been appreciating and gaining an understanding of how Aboriginal artists use certain techniques and symbols to convey feelings, emotions, and storytelling in their art. They have explored the works of Gregg Dreise, in particular, his book "Kookoo Kookaburra". The students experimented with colours, techniques and Aboriginal symbols to create their own art pieces. They used the book, "Kookoo Kookaburra" as their inspiration. UPS P&C ELECTION DAY BBQ FUNDRAISERThank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped to make this fundraiser a success. We sold out of delicious Bacon & Egg Rolls early and had people purchasing sausage sandwiches right up to 2pm. Thank you to our community for supporting our fundraiser and helping us to make a profit of $624 which is being spent on valuable school resources. Thank you to Woolworths Unanderra for supporting our event by donating the Bread and Rolls. Thank you to Coles Figtree for supporting our event and donating soft drinks. Such a great day to be part of. Thank you from your P&C.
